One goal keeps Atlanta FC from Open Cup

On the final day of group competition, Atlanta FC did all they could to advance to the US Open Cup, but it was not to be.

Despite beating Dallas Roma FC 3-0, Atlanta came up just short of their goal, as Clearwater Galactics defeated LA Mudbugs 6-1 to win Group A and advance to the Open Cup.

Ramiro Canovas scored all 3 goals for Atlanta FC, as Dallas Roma finished the game with 9 men.

The deciding game turned out to be the first of the tournament for both Atlanta and Clearwater, when the Galactics coming from behind to win 4-3.

Clearwater finished the group stage on 7 points, while Atlanta FC finished with 6.

What could have been for the Naranja, as a tie against Clearwater would have flipped positions for the top 2.

Nevertheless, a great effort for the new team in their first shot at US Soccer's oldest competition.

The season now moves on in the NPSL, as well as competing in the upcoming Region III U23 Tournament to be held at the Georgia Soccer Park in East Point from June 20-22.

If you remember correctly, the Liga Lawrenceville U23s won last year's tournament at the Polo Fields in Cumming to advance to the national finals, where they fell in the final.
