USASA Region III Finals Day One

As alluded to in the comments of the previous post, Atlanta FC lost their first game of the USASA Region III Finals early this afternoon.

Luckily, the 4-3 loss to Clearwater Galactics hasn't knocked the team out of the tournament, as it more than likely would have had the groups stayed the way I mentioned in yesterday's post.

But Real Madrid's (Austin) withdrawal from the tournament forced organizers to make some changes, putting Atlanta FC in the same group with the aforementioned Galactics, tomorrow's opponent the Louisiana Mudbugs and US Open Cup legends Dallas Roma.

Roma beat Mudbugs 5-0 today to put themselves top of the group.

So from here, in order to control their own destiny, Atlanta needs to beat the Mudbugs tomorrow and have Roma defeat Clearwater.

That would make Sunday's game against Roma for all the marbles, a spot in the Open Cup, as the group winner will directly advance.

Roma plays Clearwater at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow while Atlanta and Mudbugs will kickoff at 6 p.m.

Some notes from today's Atlanta game:

- Both defender Adilson DeLima and coach Ricardo Montoya will miss tomorrow's game. Both were ejected and Montoya will sit out one game while DeLima will be out for both remaining group games.

- The Naranja came out and took a 1-0 lead through Ramiro Canovas before falling behind 2-1. Paul Buckley then tied it at 2 before DeLima gave up a PK, putting Atlanta behind once again, and they couldn't recover.

- Canovas also picked up a slight injury, but as of the time of this post, it appears he'll be ready to go tomorrow.

We'll post more tomorrow when we have some details.

Meanwhile, hopefully the good fellas at www.usopencup.com will update the tournament page, so keep checking there.
