Cupcakes Weekend Preview

Futbol galore this weekend in the Cupcake Nation.

FRIDAY: Los Gorillas head up I-85 to face the Carolina Railhawks. It's been a hard fought series this season between the two teams. Let's just hope that Schweitzer and his boys don't decide to hack Kandji out of the game. I think Atlanta definitely has a talent advantage, but I've been impressed with what the Railhawks have gotten out of their team. I don't always agree with the tactics (trash talking, cheap shots, thuggery, diving and whining, etc.), but it's been about as effective as it possibly could be.

I'll also be making a trip out to Silverbacks Park to catch the quarterfinals of the Copa Interclubes. I have to go see El Pequeño Napoleón Azteca in action.

SATURDAY: The MLS action is highlighted by the Columbus-DC match for those of us in the Cupcake Nation, while everyone else is watching the New York-LA match at the packed Giants Stadium. DC needs to overcome a worrisome game at the HDC in the SuperLiga quickly, the Crew are anxious to continue their climb up the Eastern Conference. Will Becks play in New York? I'd say yeah, although don't expect him until the second half. He's supposed to head from there out to England for the Germany friendly, then come back on Thursday for the SuperClasico against Chivas USA.

SUNDAY: The Manchester derby will get me up far too early on a Sunday. I want to see Tevez in action for the Reds, and they need a win desperately. The big Liverpool-Chelsea match will also be a fun one. The Houston-Dallas nightcap will be a good game to close things out with.

Your weekend plans?

The Silverbacks tied the Railhawks 0-0 tonight and are about to make history. They are only three points away from making the playoffs. It is a first for them.

Third time actually, the Silverbacks went to the playoffs in 2001 (losing to San Diego) and in 2002 (losing to Richmond).

If you include the Ruckus years (and you should because the franchise lineage is the same), it's the fourth time. The Ruckus went to the A-League final in 1995, defeating Montreal in the semifinals before losing to Seattle in the finals.

For the "rookie" futbol fans - how do you guys do the math and now that the team is three points away from the playoffs? I see the standings, but can only figure our current fifth place...

I'm not completely sure, I know it's similar to the "magic number" in baseball, but more complicated to figure out because of draws.

I just take people's word for it...
